Anvil Set-Up and Maintenance
ANVIL INSPECTION
Visually check anvil for signs of wear pattern developing. Feel the surface for a groove.
If a groove is present the anvil may need to be flipped, rotated or replaced. A very slight groove
is acceptable. A new knife edge will run properly in a slight groove. An anvil should get four uses.
INSTALLING NEW ANVIL
1. Loosen the wedges holding the old anvil in place and remove the anvil from its
old slot.
2. Clean the slot with a scotch scratch pad and alcohol to remove any dust,
oil or rust.
3. Insert the new anvil into the slot and snug the wedges making sure to hold the
anvil tight to the bottom of the slot.
4. Place a piece of masking tape on the anvil and jog the machine through a cut.
5. Peel off the masking tape from one side noting where the knife made the cut on
the anvil. This cut should be just above or below the centerline of the anvil.
6. If the cut is off center tighten all the wedges and run the machine.
7. Shims should NOT be used under anvils. Gage block settings should be
adjusted in place of shims.
FLIPPING THE ANVIL
1. Loosen the wedges holding the anvil in place and remove the anvil, noting its
position or side.
2. Clean the slot with a scotch scratch pad and alcohol to remove any dust,
oil or rust.
3. If there is only one groove on the side, turn the anvil end for end and install it
back into the slot. If there are two grooves on this side flip the anvil over and
install it into the slot.
4. Making sure the slot is clean, install the anvil back into the slot and snug
the wedges.
5. With one hand pressing down on the anvil, firmly tap on anvil with plastic end of
a large screwdriver to help seat anvil in the bottom of pocket. If the anvil is not
seated competely the doctor bar will be damaged upon the first rotation or jog.
6. Jog machine to assure the proper seat. Tighten wedges firmly.
7. Machine is ready to run.
8. As stated above, shims should NOT be used under anvils. Gage block settings
should be adjusted in place of shims.
